Suspect In New Mexico Shooting Arrested And Charged With Murder

Authorities in New Mexico said they have located and arrested a suspect in a shooting that occurred Friday at the University of New Mexico’s central campus.

Suspect John Fuentes, 18, was located and arrested Friday afternoon, roughly 13 hours after police responded to the shooting, according to the New Mexico State Police, as reported by CBS News.

“Fuentes was charged with murder in the first degree, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence,” CBS said. (RELATED: Internet Vigilante Group Helps PA Police Bust Alleged Child Predator)

As reported, the early Friday morning shooting left one person dead and another injured.

According to the UNM Police Department, gunshots were reported around 5 a.m. on Friday at the Casas del Rio (Gila) apartments, located at 420 Redondo Dr NE in Albuquerque. Responding officers found two individuals had been shot. One victim died at the scene, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Before they captured Fuentes, officials ordered a shelter-in-place and advised students and staff to avoid the central campus area. The university closed its central campus facilities out of an abundance of caution. The Health Sciences Center and all clinical components, however, remained open.
