Teamsters boss blasts Dems for ignoring ‘working people’

Daily Caller News Foundation

Teamsters Union President Sean O’Brien explained on “Honestly with Bari Weiss” Tuesday that he believes the Democratic Party has abandoned working Americans by serving special interests and campaigning on “social justice issues.”

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters in September 2024 declined to endorse a 2024 presidential candidate after publishing internal polling data demonstrating that nearly 60% of the workers it represented favored President Donald Trump over former Vice President Kamala Harris. O’Brien criticized Democrats on The Free Press podcast for not spending time in person with their constituents.

“Where the Democrats lost … they fell in love with their captors. They fell in love with big money. They fell in love with big tech. And they forgot who they’re truly representing: working people. You know why? Because they’re not in their communities, not in their neighborhoods,” O’Brien said. “They’re not talking to the people that they’re paid to represent. And when you talk to people one-on-one — look, I can sit in my office all day, every day, and try and solve problems over the phone and I’m not going to get a true testimonial of what is actually going on.”

“Look, this whole election for the Democrats was based on social justice issues, right? Our members … I can speak for the Teamsters — we solve a lot of those social justice issues by negotiating the strongest contracts, by fighting for rights, fighting for diversity, fighting for equality in the workplace,” he added. “And it seemed like this narrative of the social justice issues, it didn’t identify with our members. Our members identify with more money in their pockets, more job protection, better pensions.”

Trump made gains with white men lacking college degrees, black men, Latinos and Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders during the 2024 election, according to data from Democratic data firm Catalist. Portraying Harris and the Democratic Party as excessively far left on transgender issues was one of the most powerful advertising campaigns in increasing backing for Trump and GOP candidates down the ballot in 2024, according to multiple reports.
