As Starmer rolls out the red carpet for President Macron in a bid to bag a ‘one in, one out’ migrant deal, all eyes turn to the state banquet where King Charles is expected to declare that there are “no borders” between Britain and France when it comes to tackling “complex threats”. Très diplomatique…

Except Downing Street doesn’t appear to agree. Asked at Lobby briefing this morning whether Number 10 supported King Charles’ comments, Starmer’s spokesman refused to answer, instead saying:

“The government’s position on the need for action on small boat crossings – over the next few days you will see the strength of our growing relationship with the French government, that is what we are committed to.”

Meanwhile, the boats keep coming. Former immigration enforcement chief David Wood has warned the UK is on track for a record-busting 74,000 small boat arrivals this year – a full 60% surge on the 2022 high of 45,774. Downing Street praying this state visit will still help seal the migrant deal…
