Texas AG Ken Paxton’s wife announces divorce on X over ‘recent discoveries’

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s wife announced on X this Thursday that she’s divorcing her husband because of “recent discoveries.”

“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton wrote. “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation.”

“But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage,” she added.

Exactly 20 minutes after Paxton’s wife published her post, he published his own divorce announcement, blaming the divorce on “political attacks and public scrutiny.”

After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives,” he wrote.

“I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time,” he added.

This divorce announcement comes two years after Paxton was impeached by Texas’s GOP-controlled state House over allegations of corruption, bribery, and abuse of office.

“Paxton repeatedly abused his office to help real estate investor Nate Paul’s faltering businesses amid an FBI raid, looming bankruptcies and a litany of related lawsuits,” The Texas Tribune reported at the time.

During a trial later that year in the state Senate, allegations of an extramarital affair by Paxton were broached. Paxton was specifically accused of having an extramarital affair with a former state Senate aide.

The affair became relevant to the impeachment because Nate Paul, a friend and campaign donor, allegedly employed the woman at Paxton’s request, providing her with a job to help Paxton keep the affair discreet.

This was framed as part of a quid pro quo arrangement, where Paxton allegedly used his authority as attorney general to benefit Paul in exchange for personal favors, including covering up the affair.

“In exchange [for help from Paul], Paul allegedly hired Paxton’s girlfriend so that she could move to Austin and helped Paxton clandestinely meet with her through a secret Uber account that the two men shared,” the Tribune’s 2023 report continued.

In light of all this, critics are convinced that Paxton’s divorce stems from his having never stopped the cheating:

It’s not clear yet how the divorce announcement will affect Paxton in his primary challenge against incumbent Texas Sen. John Cornyn.

“Despite his past controversies, early polls indicate Paxton leads in the primary over Cornyn, who has served in the Senate for 22 years,” Politico reported Thursday.

Cornyn, meanwhile, reportedly told reporters on Capitol Hill that he feels “badly” for Paxton’s wife and referred to the divorce as a “private matter.”

“There’s plenty of other reasons that I could comment on in terms of character, but I’ll probably just leave that alone,” he added.

As for Paxton’s wife, she’s facing backlash too for not sticking with the marriage and trying to make it work, and also for announcing the divorce on X.
