The Iranian Conflict Exposes the Real War: Anthropic vs. the Pentagon

As armchair quarterbacks and keyboard warriors, with all their national security expertise, debate the Iranian conflict currently being waged, President Donald Trump appeared Monday to give an update. Trump carefully avoided the use of the word war and called it an excursion while claiming the American timeline is well in advance of their projection.

Over 3,000 American military strikes took place in Iran in only 7 days. A feat not seen in decades. America’s power and precision are heavily dependent on 21st-century technology, artificial intelligence, and the real war Americans should be paying attention to right now is the one raging between big tech and the Pentagon.

Anthropic won a $200 million contract as the favored AI model of the Department of Defense in 2025. The Anthropic AI model is ‘Claude.’ The Maven Project is the Department of Defense’s controversial targeting system operated by another big tech government contractor, Palantir. Claude, Anthropics’ AI, is imbedded into Maven, and over the last year, military planners have seen the marriage mature into a tool that is in daily use across most parts of the military.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

While military planners prepared for potential strikes in Iran, Maven—now powered by Claude—analyzed vast amounts of data to identify and prioritize hundreds of strategic targets. The system provided real-time, precise coordinates and ranked targets by significance, dramatically accelerating the pace of American operations. What once required weeks of deliberation is now executed in real time, limiting Iran’s ability to counterstrike. After each strike, the AI tools conduct post-operation assessments, further refining military strategy on the fly.

Here is the real war and the real problem, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth ‘blacklisted’ Anthropic with the label ‘supply chain risk.’ The label ‘supply chain risk’ has only been applied to national adversaries and has never been used on an American company.  Anthropic was kicked out of the Pentagon two weeks ago, and now Anthropic has sued the US government. How does this affect the war with real bombs in Iran when the married AIs in the Department of Defense are in a divorce war?

According to Anthropic, after a months-long investigation by the DOD of the contract signed last year, Anthropic was booted for demanding that its AI not be used for autonomous weapons or domestic surveillance. Autonomous weapons have the capability of identifying targets in real time and making the decision on their own to fire on that target. Anthropic’s claim that the Pentagon wants to use AI for domestic surveillance should be concerning to all Americans.

Many in Washington DC view Anthropic’s products as superior and the Hegseth announcement came as a shock. By designating Anthropic a ‘supply chain risk’ it will require defense vendors and contractors to certify that they don’t use the company’s models in their work with the Pentagon. That costs Anthropic its customers and business.

Last week the Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, said this: “Anthropic understands that the Department of War, not private companies, makes military decisions. We have never raised objections to particular military operations nor attempted to limit the use of our technology in an ad hoc manner. However, in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values.”

Meanwhile, Anthropic filed two lawsuits Monday claiming the government’s actions are “unprecedented and unlawful,” that they are “harming Anthropic irreparably,” putting hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of contracts in jeopardy. In a statement on Monday, Anthropic said: “This is a necessary step to protect our business, our customers, and our partners. We will continue to pursue every path toward resolution, including dialogue with the government.”

Since its founding in 2021, Anthropic has been recognized as a responsible AI developer, praised for its commitment to AI safety, strong stance toward China, and prioritization of humanity’s well-being over the rush to technological advancement.

President Donald Trump said Monday he expected the excursion in Iran to ‘end soon.’ The real war in the Pentagon, the divorce of Claude and Maven will rage on and the American people better pay close attention for the potential United Suveillance States of America to continue to emerge with no oversight and American AI guard rails.
