In my home state of Hawai’i, May 1st is annually celebrated as Lei Day, a day to share and embody the “Aloha spirit.” Locals across the island chain would exchange beautiful Hawaiian leis and celebrate the best of Hawaiian culture through song and dance.
However, the rest of the world, primarily the mainland United States, celebrates May 1st as International Workers’ Day, a day remembered for the struggle for workers’ rights. The historical origins date back to May 1, 1886, when over 300,000 American workers protested across the country for an eight-hour workday. (RELATED: Why Not Celebrate the Gulags, Too?)
This year, the Left is commemorating the day to protest against President Donald Trump, claiming that “Trump and his billionaire profiteers” are creating a “race to the bottom — on wages, on benefits, on dignity itself.” The event, known on social media as the “May Day Protest” or “May Day Strong,” held over 1,000 events, both in-person and virtually, across the country.
Over 150 organizations supported the event. Prominent groups within the May Day Strong coalition are the Democratic Socialists of America, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the Center for LGBTQ Economic Advancement and Research, and the People’s Action Institute.
“The Trump administration has openly advanced authoritarianism driven by the anti-worker agenda of the capitalist class,” the Democratic Socialists of America stated in their May Day toolkit. The DSA demands that Trump “stop the assault on federal workers and services,” “stop all deportations and establish permanent protections for all undocumented residents,” tax billionaires, and establish “real democracy.” (READ MORE: Trump Versus the Courts (Again))

Thousands of Americans protested in Chicago, considered the birthplace of International Workers’ Day. Protesters marched through the city blocks holding signs that said “Resistance,” “Impeach, Convict, Remove,” and “No Human is Illegal, Due Process is Due.”
CASA, labelled by investigative journalist Laura Loomer as a “Marxist and pro-illegal alien group,” was caught on video busing members to the protest against Trump in Washington, D.C. Attempting to conceal the action, the protester approached the observer saying, “It’s May Day, do you know what International Workers Rights is?” As the observer walked away, another CASA protester proceeded to threaten him with physical harm.

Protest participants in Washington, D.C., were captured holding a giant banner of the U.S. Constitution, chanting “Love, not hate, makes America great!” One of the demonstrators is captured holding a sign that says “Trump lies,” and another holding a sign stating “To be Pro-America, is to be Anti-Trump!”

On the heels of the Trump administration’s 100th day in office, the White House has reported extensively on the various accomplishments achieved during the first few months. Much to the Left’s anguish, illegal border encounters are down by 95 percent, and President Trump has created 345,000 jobs — 228,000 of them in March alone. (READ MORE: Trump’s 100-Day Triumph)
