When God moved in grace in what we call the ‘Great Awakening’ in 18th century America, the most famous of his instruments was George Whitefield. His ministry divided the Presbyterians. Some were enthusiastic supporters; others, infected with dead orthodoxy, opposed him.
Of those who supported him, a significant number were born in Ulster. Many were taken over the ocean while they were children. They settled in New Jersey and gained their education at the ‘Log College’ instituted by Willam Tennant. He was much opposed for his evangelistic preaching also and for setting up the college to train men in a way where both orthodoxy and personal piety were stressed.
