The National Curriculum Review and Christian children

In the July 2024 edition of ET, Alun Ebenezer wrote about the changes he had seen in education during his years of involvement with the sector. I too have seen changes through my time as a pupil, a teaching assistant, a teacher (mostly in primary, but in the secondary phase too), and as someone undertaking doctoral research into education. The changes Mr Ebenezer outlined were salutary reminders about the fallen state of this world. They should drive us to prayerful consideration of the education we offer our children.

Shortly after gaining power, the Labour government announced a review of curriculum and assessment in schools. The current National Curriculum has been in place since 2014. The Department for Education says the review ‘will seek to refresh the curriculum to ensure it is cutting edge, fit for purpose and meeting the needs of children and young people to support their future life and work’. Laudable aims, but they raise the question of what we want the future of our children to look like.
