President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law and Fox News host Lara Trump warned Wednesday on “Hannity” that if voters overlook socialist Democratic NYC mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani’s shifting stance on law enforcement, the city will see a surge in crime.
While addressing anti-police remarks he made in 2020, Mamdani dodged a reporter’s question Wednesday about whether he regrets those past statements. During a segment discussing Mamdani’s candidacy, Sean Hannity asked Trump for her take on how voters in the city should respond. “This is a miracle, isn’t it, Sean? How all of a sudden in an election year, he’s totally changed his mind. This is a standard Democrat. I’m trying to get elected, so I’m willing to say literally anything in order to do so,” Trump said. “You know, we’ve had year after year of hearing this guy say, ‘Defund the police,’ you know, ‘Globalize the Intifada.’ I guess we’re supposed to just ignore those things now. This is clearly what this guy feels.”
“I’ll tell you what, you look at the recruitment levels that have dropped in the NYPD. You look at the fact that you had to roll back a lot of their budget and pull it away from them over the past couple of years because of the influx of illegal immigrants into New York City. They need a good leader at the top for the NYPD to function,” Trump added. “They don’t need a guy who thinks that they maybe should be replaced by social workers. They need somebody at the top who believes in them.”
Following the death of George Floyd in May 2020, Mamdani repeatedly called for defunding the New York Police Department (NYPD), claiming they were “racist, anti-queer and a major threat to public safety.”

In light of Monday’s mass shooting in Manhattan — where an NYPD officer was among four victims killed — Mamdani said his past comments were “made amidst a frustration” in 2020 when asked if he regretted them.
“You know, if you talk to the ICE agents around this country, despite the fact that they have been under attack in so many different big cities, what they’ll say is actually morale is very high right now,” Trump said. “It’s very high because the guy at the top, President Donald Trump, we know has our back. Talk to any law enforcement officer.”
“That is incredibly important. This guy gets into New York City as the next mayor. I can guarantee you crime will go up. It will be untenable to live in New York City any longer. The NYPD knows exactly who this guy is. He said it time and time again,” Trump said. “We should not believe him now in the 11th hour.”
After Mamdani secured the Democratic mayoral nomination for the largest city in the U.S., the socialist candidate faced backlash from Republicans and Democrats — some criticizing his policies, others slamming his refusal to denounce the phrase “globalize the intifada.”
