Ever since I was converted and began attending the communion service at the church where I first came to faith in Christ, I have struggled with a particular aspect of the Lord’s Table. I know that my participation in this means of grace is of great importance. I made it a priority to attend, and grew increasingly concerned when my fellow believers treated it lightly, and attended infrequently.
As a pastor, I have often agonised over how best to lead such a service, and how to keep the balance of speaking and keeping silence. It is that ‘silence’ that has troubled me over the years. When we sing a helpful hymn, I am blessed in mind and heart. When the words of institution are read, I am humbled. When suitable words of encouragement and devotion are brought, I am helped. But what to do in that ‘silence’? Maybe you have this problem too. Let me try and help you, by sharing with you what has helped me. I call them my ‘Three Rs’.
