“The View” co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin repeatedly corrected her fellow panelist, Sunny Hostin, during a Friday segment as she falsely accused President Donald Trump of lying about eliminating taxes on overtime pay and tips.
While the co-hosts debated whether the Democrats harmed themselves politically by covering up former President Joe Biden’s declining health, Hostin made the conversation about Trump by accusing him of lying to his base. Without evidence, she claimed that Trump had “every intention” of taking away his no tax on tips and overtime policy that he campaigned on.
“Trump lied to people. I think he lied to his base,” Hostin said. “I think he told his base that their overtime would not be taxed, that was a lie.”
“Actually, that’s in the new tax bill. It’s literally in the tax bill in Congress,” Griffin pushed back.
Hostin then claimed that congressional Republicans “had to fight” to include that policy in the bill, which Griffin then corrected her on.

“That’s not true. [Trump] ran on no tax on tips and it’s in the tax bill,” Griffin said.
“Yeah, but it wasn’t in it originally,” Hostin said.
“[The bill is] being drafted right now,” Griffin pointed out.
Hostin argued that Trump won the 2024 election because he “lied” to the American people, not because of the Democrats or Biden’s waning health. Public polling repeatedly found that voters trusted Trump over former President Kamala Harris on the economy and immigration, the two top-ranked issues ahead of the election, which caused him to make historic inroads with blue collar voters, black and Latino men.
The Republicans’ tax bill, which is set to enact Trump’s economic agenda, is set to give a $3.8 trillion tax cut and to implement a new policy to not tax tips or overtime.
Trump first announced his plan to eliminate taxes on tips during a June 9 rally in Las Vegas, Nevada. Weeks later, Harris made the same policy proposal at a Las Vegas rally in August, prompting Trump to accuse her of copying him.
