Authorities have not released his name pending further investigation and notification of family.
The Elyria Police Department, which is assisting in the investigation, confirmed that the shooting involved only one assailant and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The Elyria Fire Department and additional agencies also responded to the scene.
Due to the shooting, road closures were implemented in the area, including sections of nearby Interstate 90, to allow emergency personnel to transport the injured officers to area hospitals.
“This situation appears to have been a targeted attack on law enforcement,” Chief Failing said during a press briefing Wednesday evening.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Elyria Police Department expressed its support for the officers involved.
“We stand in unwavering support of the brave men and women of the Lorain Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officers, their families, and the entire Lorain community during this difficult time.”
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also released a statement following the incident.
“I have been briefed on the horrible officer-involved shooting in Lorain, which appears to have been a targeted attack on law enforcement,” DeWine said.
“Fran and I are praying for the three Lorain Police Department officers who were shot in the line of duty today, and our thoughts are also with their families, friends, and fellow officers in northeast Ohio.”
