Three siblings died late Thursday night after a fire tore through their father’s Kenosha, Wisconsin, apartment, and their mother suggested he failed to save them.
Authorities said crews were called just before 10:40 p.m. to a multi-family building on 43rd Avenue, according to CBS News. Two boys died at the scene; their 7-year-old sister was airlifted and later died, while the father was treated for smoke inhalation, according to local reports and officials. Jourdan Feasby said she’d spent Thanksgiving morning with her children before they went to their dad’s for the holiday. She said investigators are still determining the cause, but she delivered a pointed message about what she would have done if the fire happened on her watch, telling CBS 58 she’s now planning funerals instead of Christmas.
“You can sit here and say all you want to that I would’ve done this, this, and this, but when you’re in the situation, it’s completely different. But I will tell you that if I was in that situation, without a doubt, my kids would’ve been out or I would’ve been dead with them,” Feasby said.
Kenosha fire officials said determining a cause could take weeks, WISN 12 News reported. A fundraiser organized on behalf of the children’s father notes the three siblings “could light up any room” and is seeking help with funeral expenses.
The children were identified in multiple local reports as Rylee, 10; Connor, 9; and Alena, 7, according to CBS 58.
