Tokyo-To-Houston Flight Diverted To Seattle After Passenger Allegedly Tries To Open Exit Midflight

An international flight from Tokyo to Houston was forced to make an emergency landing in Seattle early Saturday after a passenger allegedly attempted to open an exit door midflight, NBC News reported, citing federal authorities.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) Flight 114 was nearly 10 hours into its journey from Japan’s Haneda Airport when the pilot diverted the aircraft to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport due to a “passenger disturbance,” according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), NBC News reported. Port of Seattle Police said the passenger in question attempted to open an emergency exit door while the plane was cruising over the Pacific. Fortunately, fellow passengers and crew members quickly intervened and restrained the individual.

Airline officials said the passenger became “unruly,” but they did not elaborate. Port of Seattle Police said the individual was undergoing a “medical crisis” and transported the person to a local hospital. The passenger’s identity has not been released.

A second passenger was also removed from the flight while the aircraft was still on the ground in Seattle. Police and the airline said this individual’s behavior was unrelated to the initial disturbance but described it as “unruly.” Details remain unclear.

After the removal of both passengers, the flight resumed its journey to Houston without further incident, landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport around 12:42 p.m. CT, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.com.

ANA released a statement saying, “The safety of our passengers and crew are our top priority and we applaud the efforts of local law enforcement for their support.”

The FAA has not said whether charges will be filed, but the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
