Border czar Tom Homan appeared on Monday to brush off vows from Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani of New York City to resist operations by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The reconciliation bill signed into law by President Donald Trump on Friday contained billions of dollars in funding for ICE, allowing the agency to hire 10,000 more agents and expand its detention capacity. A reporter asked Homan about Mamdani’s support for New York City’s sanctuary law.
“Like I’m at, we’re going to be in New York City and President Trump said it three weeks ago, we’re gonna double down and triple down in sanctuary cities. Why? Not because they’re a blue city or a blue state, because we know that’s where the problem is,” Homan responded. “We know they’re releasing public safety threats and national security threats to the streets every day because they don’t honor our detainees. We know that.”

“We don’t have that problem like in Florida, where every sheriff in the state is working with us,” Homan said. “So where we’re going to send our assets, we’re going to send them where the problem is, sanctuary cities. So I’ve said it before, we’ll flood the zone in sanctuary cities.”
President Donald Trump has made illegal immigration a priority in his second term after campaigning on the issue during the 2024 presidential election. Trump issued several executive orders to address illegal immigration and border security, including designating Mexican drug cartels, the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua and the El Salvadoran prison gang MS-13 as foreign terrorist organizations upon taking office Jan. 20 and invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to speed up the deportation of gang members on March 15.
Resistance to ICE operations to arrest illegal immigrants has also included a Milwaukee judge who allegedly helped an illegal immigrant briefly evade ICE agents sent to arrest an illegal immigrant and Democratic Mayor Freddie O’Connell of Nashville releasing the names of ICE agents involved in a crackdown on illegal immigrants in the city.
In New York City, ICE agents arrested Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander June 18 after he allegedly interfered with an operation in a Manhattan court, while Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey was charged with assaulting an ICE agent after an incident in May at an ICE facility in Newark.
