Democratic strategist James Carville said Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas is unlikely to win a U.S. Senate race because she focuses too much on herself rather than voters, according to comments he made Thursday on the “Politicon” podcast, as reported by Breitbart.
Carville, a longtime Democratic political consultant, discussed Crockett’s political style and questioned whether it could translate into success in a statewide Senate contest in Texas.
Crockett currently represents a heavily Democratic congressional district.

“Jasmine Crockett, first of all, she seems like she’s well-educated and things like that. She’s highly — she’s got a lot of energy, but she to me, to me, she violates the first rule of politics,” Carville said. “And that is in politics, we always make it about the voters and never about yourself.”
Carville said Crockett’s public messaging centers more on her own profile than on addressing voter concerns. “You listen to her talk. It’s a lot more about herself than it is to voters,” he said.
During the discussion, Carville referenced polling and Crockett’s decision-making process, saying early numbers can be misleading.
“And Republicans are bragging. And there’s probably some truth to it that they put a poll out showing that, of course, you could take a poll now, Harris and Biden will be ahead because people just you notice that anybody in the world, as long as you’ve been covering politics and doing polling as kind of early polling, doesn’t mean anything,” Carville said.

He added that Crockett cited polling as a reason for entering the race. “And she said she was. She saw the polls, and she thought she had to get in.”
Carville also criticized Crockett for representing what he described as a safe Democratic district rather than working to flip competitive seats.

“I’m just telling you, she she lives in a plus 24 represents a plus 24 Democratic district,” he said. “I would like a lot more if she tried to help Democrat two and plus three Republican districts.”
He argued that remaining in Congress from a safe seat allows lawmakers to maintain media exposure without building broader electoral coalitions.
“As long as you can get, you can stay in Congress as long as you want,” Carville said. “You can get all the hits. You can get all the clicks you can get on all of the TV shows.”
Carville said media attention and fundraising do not translate into winning competitive elections. “You can get in as long as you’re polemic, but you’re not helping very much,” he said, adding that he pointed to Tennessee as evidence of his argument.
In closing, Carville said Crockett’s approach does not align with what he believes wins elections.
“What wins elections is not sitting there talking in about yourself when winning elections is not how many clicks you get or how much overnight fundraising you do,” he said.
“When elections is being part of framing issues and understanding where people are coming from.”
“I don’t think Congressman Crockett is very good at that,” Carville added. “I’ll be very frank.”
Crockett has not responded publicly to Carville’s remarks. The comments come as Democrats continue internal debates over messaging, strategy, and candidate viability in statewide races in Republican-leaning states such as Texas.
