Tropical Storm Fernand Forms In Atlantic Ocean, Expected To Become Hurricane

Located southeast of Bermuda, a tropical storm that has recently developed was given a name Saturday, with the system expected to get stronger as it heads north throughout the weekend.

A reconnaissance mission from the Air Force Reserve collected data and satellite imagery that indicated the forming of Tropical Storm Fernand around 400 miles from Bermuda in the south-southeast direction.

As of the last check, Fernand has maximum sustained winds near 40 mph, with gusts clocking in at a higher rate. The storm‘s trajectory is northward. (RELATED: NASA Shares Footage Of Mars’ Night Sky, And The Views Are Absolutely Majestic)

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), it’s anticipated that Fernand will strengthen in the next few days as he passes Bermuda towards its east.

Tropical Storm Fernand is expected to become Hurricane Fernand, but will stay a long distance from the U.S. East Coast, per forecast models.

Surf and gale conditions are expected to be dangerous around Bermuda in the early part of the workweek as Fernand gets to its closest point to the island, according to the NHC.

An advisory has been issued to both residents and tourists in Bermuda that Fernand should be monitored as a slight deviation west in the storm‘s track could cause impacts to be more significant.

“After Monday, Fernand should weaken due to the influences of cooler waters and increasing shear, and the storm will likely become post-tropical in 3-4 days,” said NHC forecasters.
