Tropical Storm Humberto Develops In Atlantic, Expected To Become Powerful Hurricane

Tropical Storm Humberto developed Wednesday in the Atlantic Ocean.

Formerly known as Invest 93L, Humberto is the eighth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season that has received a name.

An invest, short for investigative area, becomes a tropical storm after recording sustained winds of 39-73 mph. If the system reaches at least 74 mph, it will become a hurricane.

Per the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Tropical Storm Humberto currently has 40 mph winds and is on a west-northwest track in the Atlantic Ocean. (RELATED: Wild Video Shows Hong Kong Luxury Hotel Getting Thrashed By Powerful Storm Surge From Super Typhoon Ragasa)

The system is forecasted to form into a hurricane by this weekend as it goes northwest towards the United States. Ultimately though, Humberto, which is forecasted to be a Category 2 or 3 storm, is expected to curve out to the Atlantic and will be hundreds of miles from the East Coast.

Hurricane Gabrielle and Invest 94L are also being monitored by forecasters in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Atlantic hurricane season ends Nov. 30.

The NHC and other forecasters are closely monitoring Invest 94L in the Atlantic and say that this system will most likely form into a tropical depression as well, and it should happen soon.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the invest around the northeastern Caribbean Sea is still producing a huge area of thunderstorms, showers and gusty winds that are disorganized throughout most of the Windward and Leeward islands.

An aircraft from the NOAA Hurricane Hunters is set to fly numerous missions Wednesday afternoon into Invest 94L to collect more information.

The NHC stated that the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands should continue to monitor Invest 94L.
