Borko Stankovic was illegally operating a semi-truck in Indiana when he swerved into oncoming traffic after a car in front of him came to a stop.
The Serbian national’s move jack-knifed the truck he was driving and hit a Subaru, killing its driver, Jeffrey Eberly, 54, at the scene.
Add to that, it’s been discovered that Stankovic’s companies, Eclipse Trucking Inc. and ESD Team Inc., received a combined $36,082 in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans during the COVID era.
PPP records show that Stankovic owned both companies, both listing only one employee, and that the loans were forgiven, Fox reported.
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Chicago lodged an immigration detainer with the Porter County Jail against criminal illegal alien Borko Stankovic following his arrest on Oct. 15 for reckless homicide and criminal recklessness,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital.
NEW: DHS identifies the driver of a semi-truck who swerved into oncoming traffic and crashed head on into a Subaru in Indiana last week, killing a man, as a Serbian illegal alien without a commercial driver’s license who has been a visa overstay since February 2011. McLaughlin said Stankovic had been in the US illegally since 2011, when his visa expired, and was driving on a family member’s suspended CDL from Illinois, but didn’t possess a valid CDL himself.
“Stankovic, a 41-year-old illegal alien from Serbia and Montenegro, was driving a semi-truck and caused a multi-vehicle accident in Portage, Indiana, that tragically claimed the life of Jeffrey Eberly. This criminal illegal alien didn’t even have a valid commercial [driver’s] license (CDL). DHS is working with our state and local partners to get illegal alien truck drivers who often don’t know basic traffic laws off our highways,” McLaughlin said.
Policy director for the Immigration Accountability Project, Rosemary Jenks, told Fox News Digital that illegal immigrants shouldn’t have been allowed to access PPP loans.
“Americans should be concerned that any illegal alien is able to access any government benefits,” Jenks said. “We all kind of know that under the Biden administration during COVID, there were no checks on who was getting money, who was taking out loans. But the fact is that illegal aliens should never be able to access our taxpayer dollars. That’s just a fact. Those dollars should be reserved for Americans.”
