Trump admin moving ‘quickly’ to hit John Bolton with criminal indictment: report

The Trump administration is reportedly moving “quickly” to file criminal charges against former National Security Adviser John Bolton.

The indictment could arrive as soon as next week, according to MSNBC.

Two anonymous sources familiar with the matter confirmed to the network that a grand jury in Maryland has for a couple weeks been hearing and reviewing evidence showing that Bolton stored classified national security documents at his home.

The sources added that the charges against Bolton have more factual merit than the recent charges against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

“Kelly Hayes, the acting U.S. Attorney for Maryland, has told Justice Department colleagues she believes there is a reasonable basis to pursue charges against Bolton,” MSNBC noted, citing its two sources.

“Ed Martin, who served briefly as Trump’s acting U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia and whom Trump has since named to head the Justice Department’s Weaponization Working Group, has met multiple times with Hayes to monitor the Bolton case,” its reporting continued.

One of MSNBC’s sources said that Hayes’ team is considering filing a rushed complaint “that would allow the office to lodge criminal allegations quickly and seek a grand jury indictment at a later date.”

MSNBC also learned that the FBI conducted a surprise raid on Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, on Sept. 22 in search of classified documents.

Bolton’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, has defended Bolton’s possession of classified documents by alleging that they date back to the administration of President George W. Bush and that they’re typically kept by long-time government employees

“An objective and thorough review will show nothing inappropriate was stored or kept by Ambassador Bolton,” Lowell said in a statement last month.

How did feds discover Bolton’s classified stockpile in the first place?

“[T]he U.S. government discovered Bolton’s AOL emails during intelligence collection directed at [an] unnamed foreign government,” according to MSNBC. “What was found, they said, fueled an investigation into whether Bolton has mishandled classified information that began during the Biden administration.”

“The sources said that the sensitivity of how the government came by those records was one factor that slowed the Bolton investigation. By moving forward, they said, the United States has now revealed to a foreign government that it has access to specific systems — a revelation, the sources said, that is likely more damaging to U.S. national security than any secret Bolton may have revealed,” the reporting continued.

Trump supporters celebrated the news of Bolton’s impending indictment:

In a statement to NBC News, a Department of Justice spokesperson declined to discuss Bolton’s grand jury.

“As a matter of law, we will not discuss any grand jury matters with the media, but this Justice Department is united as one team in our mission to make America safe again,” the spokesperson said. “And the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, along with the entire team at Main Justice continue to empower our US Attorneys to pursue justice in every case.”
