Trump administration considers blocking UN diplomats from shopping at Costco and Sams Clubs

A new move by President Donald Trump could prevent Iranian diplomats from shopping at a beloved big box store.

The administration recently blocked visas for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, and is now mulling over restrictions on diplomats from Zimbabwe, Iran, Brazil and Sudan ahead of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

Watch:

One proposal being considered is a restriction that would prevent Iranian diplomats from shopping at Costco. Historically, Iranians have come to the United States and purchased goods at big box stores such as Costco and Sam’s Club, which are difficult to find in their home country. They then ship these goods back overseas for cheap. The new restrictions would require State Department approval for such shopping trips, with a memo suggesting “drafting rules that would let the State Department impose conditions on wholesale club memberships for all foreign diplomats in the U.S.,” according to Fox News.

It’s not clear if these same restrictions would apply to Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or other delegates.

“Syria will likely face fewer restrictions after its delegation received a waiver from travel limits imposed more than a decade ago,” Fox reported.
