While many in the United States and Israel have been hopeful of Syrian President Abu Mohammad al-Julani (also known as Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa)’s seeming openness to peace with Israel, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (“Bibi”) should disregard such overtures as a pipe dream. If the U.S. and Israel pursue extending the Abraham Accords to Syria, they will be enabling the genocide that the Syrian government and its affiliated thugs are seeking to perpetrate against the Druze in Sweida, and weaken U.S. and Israeli interests in the region.
The Druze are an ancient people who view Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, as their chief prophet. And reports of a Syrian jihad against the Druze abound.
“Syrian soldiers” forced Druze civilians to jump off balconies (a signature ISIS weapon of war).
A terrorist (wearing an ISIS badge) executed an elderly Druze man in his own home.
Another terrorist burned an elderly Druze man alive.
Another terrorist ripped the heart out of a Druze man while the latter was still alive.
Terrorists are indiscriminately killing women and children, according to eyewitness accounts. Qatari TV cut off an interview of Druze women and children after they disclosed on live TV that they are being kidnapped by Bedouin men.
A Druze baby was kidnapped (like Hamas kidnapped Kfir Bibas).
Jihadists have ripped off Druze men’s mustaches (like the Nazis’ forced shaving of Orthodox Jews).
Islamists wearing “PRESS” vests desecrated a Druze house of worship.
And shocker, the new Syrian government (born from jihadist roots) is a participant in these atrocities. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, since July 13, fighters “affiliated with the ministries of defense and interior” have “executed … 194 individuals, including 28 women, eight children, and an elderly man.” A soldier of the new Syrian army was interviewed before entering Sweida wearing an ISIS patch and proclaiming that his forces “are entering Sweida in order to purify it from the filth of (Druze leader Hikmat) Al-Hijri and his followers.”
Another soldier admitted being sent by Syria’s defense ministry to perpetrate atrocities against Druze, and identified his commander as an individual who orchestrated a recent massacre of Alawites — and that after killing the Druze, the forces would “continue to Tel Aviv.”
Syrian forces also murdered an American citizen (a Druze from Oklahoma) as well as his entire family. Either Syrian government forces or Bedouin factions led by Julani’s “former” group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) committed a massacre of civilians in the National Hospital in Sweida. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights states that the National Hospital received “heavy shelling,” which also may be indicative of a government-sponsored or government-affiliated attack. One of Julani’s men shot an unarmed Druze in the street, and then shot the camera that filmed the war crime.
If that wasn’t enough, the new Syrian government is inciting the Syrian people to commit more atrocities. The Supreme Fatwa Council of the Syrian Arab Republic declared a fatwa on the Druze. Following a recent ceasefire, Julani praised the Bedouin tribes that attacked the Druze for “heroic actions” and being a “symbol of lofty values and principles,” while calling the Druze “outlaws” (reminiscent of Hutu leadership labelling Tutsis “snakes” and “cockroaches” before committing genocide in Rwanda).
Rather than fall for Julani’s disingenuous peace overtures and stand idly by, Israel has responded to the jihad against the Druze with kinetic force. Bibi has stated multiple times that Syria’s south must be demilitarized, and that the Syrian government and its allies should not harm the Druze (he has called both Israeli and Syrian Druze “my brothers”).
So when Syrian tanks approached Sweida, a Druze city in Southern Syria, the IDF bombed these forces en route, attacked Syrian government forces over 160 times from the air, and struck both the Presidential Palace and the Syrian General Staff Headquarters.
Despite calls from Bibi to stand down while the IDF does its job, approximately 1,000 Israeli Druze stormed into Syria to rescue their brethren. Israel later airdropped medical aid to the Druze (following the fall of Assad, Israel had previously set up a field hospital to treat Druze and Sunnis in Syria).
The U.S. and Israel should work to expand the Abraham Accords to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and hopefully many more countries. But they should take a hard pass on Syria’s snake oil.
