Trump Attends FIFA Club World Cup Final as America Prepares to Host Major Sports Tournaments | The American Spectator

As America prepares to host several international sporting events in the coming years, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a statement by attending the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday.

This marked the first time a sitting U.S. president has attended a soccer match. After the match, Trump joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino to present the trophy to Chelsea after their 3–0 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

The Club World Cup was hosted across the U.S. this June and July and featured 32 teams from around the world. Sunday’s final was held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Trump received thunderous applause upon his arrival, according to the New York Post, although other outlets reported a “scattering of boos” at other points in the night.

Trump has made sports events an integral part of his public appearances, including a number of high-profile appearances during his presidency. According to Newsweek, sports outings have dominated Trump’s domestic travel since taking office.

Trump attended the NCAA Football National Championship in 2018, and earlier this year, he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. He has also attended the Daytona 500 in both 2020 and 2025, during which he led pace laps in his presidential limousine.

The president has been a regular at UFC fights both before and after his return to the White House. He has even proposed hosting a UFC fight on the White House grounds as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

This year’s Club World Cup previewed next year’s FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. That tournament will feature 48 national teams, with MetLife Stadium also set to host the final.

In an interview at the final on Sunday, Trump said, “Now we have a hot country. It’s really hot and I think the soccer is going to be very hot here too.”

FIFA also announced last week that it has opened an office in Trump Tower in New York City, furthering ties between the organization and the president. “New York is about to be the football capital of the world,” the organization’s president said.

Eric Trump attended the opening and thanked FIFA for bringing the World Cup to America, saying,  “We’re honored, we’re excited about all the things that FIFA is doing.”

President Trump recently commented that he was looking forward to hosting the 2026 World Cup during his Memorial Day remarks at Arlington National Cemetery. He joked, “In some ways I’m glad I missed that second term … because I wouldn’t be your president” for America’s semiquincentennial, and “in addition, we have the World Cup and we have the Olympics.”
