Trump, Brazil’s Lula to meet after trading barbs at U.N.

UNITED NATIONS — President Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are planning to meet next week, even after blasting each other at the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

Mr. Trump said he had “a good talk” with Mr. Lula, who seemed like “a nice man.”

Moments later, he claimed Mr. Lula’s South American country is “doing poorly and will continue to do poorly.”

Mr. Trump continued, “They can only do well when they work with us. Without us, they will fail just as others have failed.”

Moments earlier, Mr. Lula blasted the U.S. president, saying it was “unacceptable” that Mr. Trump has penalized Brazil for prosecuting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

“The aggression against the independence of the judiciary branch of power is unacceptable. This interference in domestic affairs is aided by a subservient far right who is nostalgic of past hegemonies,” Mr. Lula said.
