Trump expects Hamas decision on peace proposal within hours

President Trump said he should know where Hamas stands on his proposal for a ceasefire with Israel within a day.

The president made his statement late Thursday after announcing that Israel agreed to the “necessary conditions” to finalize a two-month ceasefire with the terrorist group.

“My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza,” he posted Tuesday on social media. “Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War.”

When asked by a reporter Thursday after returning from Iowa to Washington if Hamas agreed to the proposition, Mr. Trump replied, “We’ll see what happens. We are going to know over the next 24 hours.”

The proposal is a framework sent to Hamas by mediators from Egypt and Qatar.

The president previously cautioned Hamas it should accept the deal, because “it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE.”

Hamas released a statement Friday morning saying it was considering Mr. Trump’s proposal with other Palestinian groups and that it would make a “final decision” once those conversations are done.

Hamas wants reassurances that the agreement will include a withdrawal of the Israeli military from some regions of the Gaza Strip and that Israel wouldn’t restart assaults after the ceasefire ends.

Mr. Trump is expected to meet Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where they will discuss several issues, including the war in Gaza.
