Brianna Wu, a Democrat who has been critical of President Trump, said she supports the United States’ military action against Iran, arguing the situation differs from past conflicts and could produce long-term strategic benefits.
“Good morning. I guess you’re waking up exactly like I am learning that the United States is at war with Iran,” Wu said. “I want to talk to you about why I a Democrat who did not vote for President Trump. Do not support President Trump. Do not like President Trump, why I am 100% in support of this, because I think it’s going to be good for our country in the long run.”
Wu said the current situation should not be compared to earlier U.S. engagements in Iraq or Afghanistan.

“The first thing you should know is this situation is not anything like Iraq or Afghanistan,” she said. “In Afghanistan, you basically had terrorists hiding in tunnels that were secretly being supported by the government. This isn’t like that at all.”
She described the position of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, within the country.
“You know, the IRGC actually have to specifically live outside of population centers, because the people of Iran hate them so much it would kill them if they actually had access to guns,” Wu said.
Wu referenced Iran’s political history prior to the 1979 revolution.

“This was a country that was actually a modern paradise in the Middle East before the Iranian Revolution,” she said.
She criticized the current Iranian government.
“And the way these people have kept power has been basically to institute this hardcore theocratic version of Islamism,” Wu said. “They’ve been oppressing women.”
“They’ve been forcing gay men to get vaginoplasty and become trans, which is just literally insane,” she added. “This is an awful, awful government.”
Wu said she believes a successful outcome would allow the United States to shift its focus away from the Middle East.
“The most important thing I want to stress to liberals out there, though, is this, we will get so much as a country, if we succeed at doing this for so many administrations, Obama, Trump won Biden before they’ve come into office,” she said.
“Every single one of these presidents has said we want to pivot away from the Middle East and focus more on Asia,” Wu continued. “In every single one of these administrations, Republicans and Democrats have been unable to do this, because Iran has been destabilizing it the entire time.”
Wu argued that if the IRGC were to fall, regional dynamics would change.
“If the IRGC falls, what is going to happen is Saudi Arabia, which is a far more stable country, is going to play a role in basically stopping all this terrorism from spreading through the region,” she said.
“You’re going to see a lack of support from the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas,” Wu added. “These groups are not going to have the same missiles, guns, firepower, funding that they used to.”
She concluded by linking those changes to broader U.S. foreign policy goals.
“This is massively going to stabilize the Middle East, meaning we can focus on China, meaning we can focus on our alliance with India, we can focus more on Russia,” Wu said. “This would be so good for our country, even if you don’t like this president, because I don’t this is the right thing to do.”
