Trump pulls US out of UN agency over support of ‘woke’ social causes

The Trump administration has reportedly pulled the United States out of a United Nations agency because of its support of “woke” causes.

The announcement on Tuesday revealed that the U.S. will exit the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as the State Department emphasized that it is “not in the national interest” for the country to stay on.

“President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from UNESCO – which supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for in November. This president will always put America First and ensure our country’s membership in all international organizations aligns with our national interests,” said White House Deputy Spokesperson Anna Kelly.

“Today, the United States informed Director-General Audrey Azoulay of the United States’ decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Continued involvement in UNESCO is not in the national interest of the United States,” State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.

UNESCO works to advance divisive social and cultural causes and maintains an outsized focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy. UNESCO’s decision to admit the ‘State of Palestine’ as a Member State is highly problematic, contrary to U.S. policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-Israel rhetoric within the organization,” Bruce continued.

“Continued U.S. participation in international organizations will focus on advancing American interests with clarity and conviction,” Bruce added.

Today, the United States announced our decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Like many UN organizations, UNESCO strayed from its founding mission. Going forward, U.S. participation in international organizations must make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

The U.S. withdrew from UNESCO in October 2017, during President Trump’s first term, but in 2023, President Joe Biden rejoined the agency. In an executive order in February, Trump pulled the U.S. from the United Nations Human Rights Council and UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees. The same order directed a review of the UNESCO participation.

“I’ve always felt that the U.N. has tremendous potential. It’s not living up to that potential right now. It really hasn’t for a long time,” the president said at the time.

Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar agreed that the U.S. move was a “necessary  step” that was “designed to promote justice and Israel’s right to fair treatment in the U.N. system, a right which has often been trampled due to politicization in this arena.”

“Singling out Israel and politicization by member states must end, in this and all professional U.N. agencies,” Sa’ar added in a post on X.
