Trump Pushes “Final Proposal” for Gaza Cease-Fire, Hamas on the Clock

President Donald Trump announced Friday that a decision from Hamas on a proposed cease-fire with Israel is expected within the next 24 hours, as reported by The New York Post.

The proposal, which Trump has referred to as the “final proposal,” aims to establish a 60-day pause in hostilities in Gaza, during which both parties would engage in negotiations to bring the ongoing war to an end.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We’ll see what happens, we are going to know over the next 24 hours,” when asked whether Hamas had accepted the terms of the deal.

Earlier in the week, Trump confirmed that Israel had agreed to the conditions necessary to move forward with the cease-fire.

However, a source close to Hamas said the group is seeking assurances that the U.S.-backed deal will ultimately result in the end of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Two Israeli officials confirmed that final details are still being negotiated. According to Gaza authorities, dozens of Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Thursday as talks continued.

The current conflict began in October 2023 when Hamas launched a large-scale attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli data.

In response, Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza, which Gaza’s health ministry claims has resulted in over 56,000 deaths. The ongoing fighting has also displaced much of Gaza’s population and led to severe humanitarian concerns.

International scrutiny has intensified as a result of the humanitarian toll. Israel is facing accusations of war crimes at the International Criminal Court and genocide at the International Court of Justice—allegations that Israeli officials have denied.

The last cease-fire, which lasted two months, ended on March 18 following Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed over 400 Palestinians.

Earlier this year, President Trump suggested a U.S.-administered solution for Gaza, which was condemned by Palestinian leaders, the United Nations, and international rights groups.

In addition to discussions surrounding the cease-fire, Trump also addressed the future of the Abraham Accords.

On Friday, he confirmed that he had discussed the expansion of the normalization agreements during a recent meeting with Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman at the White House.

“It’s one of the things we talked about,” Trump said, referring to the accords.

“I think a lot of people are going to be joining the Abraham Accords.”

The conversation came just days ahead of a planned visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump noted that the ongoing deterioration of Iran’s position, particularly following joint U.S.-Israeli military actions, could be a catalyst for additional Arab nations to pursue normalization with Israel.

Following the White House meeting, Axios reported that Prince Khalid spoke by phone with Iran’s top military commander, Abdolrahim Mousavi, signaling the complex regional diplomacy in play.

Trump’s administration originally brokered the Abraham Accords during his first term, securing normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco.

The current round of diplomacy comes at a critical time, with the international community closely watching whether Hamas will agree to the proposed cease-fire framework and whether additional Arab nations will join the normalization effort.
