Just minutes into his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump gave a moment nearly everyone in the House Chamber could get behind.
From the gallery, the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team entered to a standing ovation from Congress. The president announced that the goalie of the gold medal-winning team would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Throughout the night, Trump built on the moment, reflecting on America’s accomplishments ahead of its 250th birthday. He remained largely disciplined and relaxed, as he drew parallels from the first year of his second term to former President Joe Biden’s administration.
“A short while ago we were a dead country, now we are the hottest country in the world. The hottest!” Trump said, declaring that the state of the nation is strong.

Not even screaming Democrats could pull Trump from his preparation, as he largely stuck to his teleprompter to deliver his message. Occasionally, the president veered from his remarks to note that Democrats had not stood and cheered when he called to outlaw sex-change surgeries for minors, or for American citizens to be prioritized over illegal aliens. “These people are crazy. I’m telling you. They’re crazy,” Trump said, referring to the few Democrats in the chamber.

Another unifying moment came when the president turned to Erika Kirk, the widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was brutally murdered in September. The president spoke about faith and the religious revival that he believes is taking over the nation following the murder of Kirk, whom he deemed a martyr. The whole chamber was on its feet as the president condemned political violence.
The president heavily touted the economy and his administration’s work to bring the country back from “Bidenomics.”
And after months of big headlines and criticism for putting an emphasis on foreign policy, the president largely focused his speech on domestic policy and his plans for the country’s future at home.
Trump called on Congress to make the ban on Wall Street investment firms buying single-family homes permanent and demanded that Democrats end the partial government shutdown and restore funding to the Department of Homeland Security.
“From 1776 to today, every generation of Americans has stepped forward to defend life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for the next. Now, it is our turn,” Trump said.
“Together, we are building a nation where every child has the chance to reach higher and go farther — where government answers to the people, not the powerful — and where the interests of hardworking American citizens are always our first and ultimate concern,” he added.
Throughout the address, Trump used the stories of everyday Americans to display how his policies are effective, while drawing contrast to Democrats.
The president shouted out one of his special guests, Sage Blair, who was in attendance with her mother, Michele Blair, as the Daily Caller first reported. When Sage Blair was 14 years old, the president explained, her school teachers tried to secretly convince her that she was a male. The state eventually decided to take the young girl away from her parents because they weren’t affirming her new chosen gender.
West Virginia National Guard member Andrew Wolfe, who was critically injured after an Afghan national shot him while on patrol in the nation’s capital, was in attendance and received the Purple Heart during the address. The president also highlighted George “Buddy” Taggart, a World War II veteran who earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Taggart will turn 100 years old on July 4, 2026 – America’s 250th birthday.
Though the president’s signature “weave” was largely missing from his speech, Trump still broke the record for the longest State of the Union address, talking for 108 minutes.

Trump kept patriotism at the center of his address throughout the 108 minutes, concluding by awarding two veterans with the Medal of Honor, the first time a president has done so during a State of the Union Address.
Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover, a U.S. Army helicopter pilot who was wounded during the administration’s raid on Venezuela, received the Medal of Honor alongside 100-year-old Captain E. Royce Williams, a veteran of the Korean War.
“When the world needs courage, daring, vision and inspiration, it is still turning to America, and when God needs a nation to work his miracles, He knows exactly who to ask,” Trump said.
“There is no challenge Americans cannot overcome, no frontier too vast for us to conquer, no dream too bold for us to chase, no horizon too distant for us to claim, for our destiny is written by the hand of Providence, and these first 250 years were just the beginning,” the president concluded.
