Trump Says Putin, Zelenskyy To Meet Following Alaska Summit

President Donald Trump said Friday on Fox News’ “Hannity” that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet.

Trump and Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday to discuss a potential end to the Ukraine-Russia conflict; however, no deal has been confirmed. In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, the president said that a follow-up meeting will be scheduled between the two foreign leaders, floating the idea that he might also attend. “We were together almost three hours, and it was very extensive, and we agreed on a lot of points. I mean, a lot of points were agreed on, but there’s not that much, as you know, one or two pretty significant items. But I think they can be reached,” Trump said. “Now it’s really up to President Zelenskyy to get it done. And I would also say the European nations. They have to get involved a little bit, but it’s up to President Zelenskyy.”

“And if they’d like, I’ll be at that next meeting. They’re going to set up a meeting now between President Zelenskyy and President Putin. And, myself, I guess, you know, I didn’t even, I didn’t ask about it. Not that I want to be there, but I want to make sure it gets done.”

The meeting between Putin and Trump comes after the president has long called for peace between the two countries, dating back to his presidential campaign. Following roughly three hours of negotiations in Alaska, both Putin and Trump said the talks went well, though Trump added, “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”

Prior to the summit, Trump had announced a timeline for Putin to begin negotiations, as the Russian president showed reluctance to hold any discussions with Ukraine. After meeting with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff on Aug. 6, reports indicated that Putin would consider halting the war in exchange for Kyiv giving up the Russian-speaking Donbas region.

However, Zelenskyy pushed back on the idea, telling reporters Tuesday, “For Russians, Donbas is a bridgehead for a future new offensive,” according to the Business Standard.

A date for the meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin has not been announced, and neither leader has commented on Trump’s confirmation. Before the meeting, Zelenskyy posted on X, calling on Russia to “end the war that it itself started.”

“Russia must end the war that it itself started and has been dragging out for years. The killings must stop. A meeting of leaders is needed – at the very least, Ukraine, America, and the Russian side – and it is precisely in such a format that effective decisions are possible. Security guarantees are needed,” Zelenskyy wrote. “Lasting peace is needed. Everyone knows the key objectives. I want to thank everyone who is helping to achieve real results.”
