Trump Says Rudy Giuliani to Receive the Highest Civilian Honor the Country has to Offer [WATCH]

President Donald Trump announced Monday that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor awarded in the United States. The announcement marks the first Medal of Freedom presented by Trump during his second term in office.

Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, praising Giuliani’s leadership and service.

“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor. Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded at the president’s discretion to individuals who have made “especially meritorious” contributions to the national interests of the United States, security, world peace, cultural advancement, or other significant achievements.

Trump’s announcement came one day after Giuliani was hospitalized in New Hampshire following a vehicle accident.

According to Michael Ragusa, Giuliani’s head of security, the former mayor stopped to assist a domestic violence victim and called 911 before his vehicle was “struck from behind at high speed” on the highway.

Giuliani sustained a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.

Ragusa said Giuliani remained “in good spirits and recovering tremendously.”

Supporters across the country expressed well wishes following the accident.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Michigan State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt were among those who shared messages on social media offering prayers for Giuliani’s recovery.

Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994 until 2001, gaining national recognition for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

He later became one of Trump’s most prominent allies, serving as his personal attorney during the first administration.

The decision to honor Giuliani comes after the Medal of Freedom was awarded by Joe Biden to a series of figures whose selection drew criticism.

Biden bestowed the honor on recipients including former Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, activist and athlete Megan Rapinoe, billionaire George Soros, and Raul Yzaguirre, the former president of the National Council of La Raza.

Biden said those honorees had made “exemplary contributions” to American society.

Following Biden’s selections, Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow remarked that the former president “gave out Presidential Medals of Freedom, which made a mockery of this country,” and argued Biden “reduced it to trolling.”

Trump’s decision to award Giuliani reflects both Giuliani’s long-standing public service and his close relationship with the president.
