The Trump political team is joining the hoopla surrounding the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad by creating its own denim product.
An email sent out Wednesday advertised “THE GREAT JEANS MAGA HAT!” that 100 people have a shot at winning by donating to the Trump National Committee.
“Donald Trump has great jeans,” the email subject line said.
The line is a play on the American Eagle ad that features Ms. Sweeney, a star in “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” and pushes her beauty.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color,” she says in the denim ad. “My jeans are blue.”
The hat is made of light blue denim with “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” on it.
President Trump last week praised the ad after finding out she’s a registered Republican.
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ’HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ’flying off the shelves,’” he posted. “Go get ’em, Sydney!”
The ad was criticized by people on the left for its play on words for “jeans” and “genes.”
American Eagle has maintained the ad is about only jeans.
“’Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the company said. “Her jeans. Her story.”
The statement added, “We continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
In a poll from The Economist and YouGov, only 12% said they considered the ad offensive, while 39% said it was clever.
The poll was taken from Aug. 9-11 with 1,635 adults. It has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
