Trump Wants $58 Million To Boost Security For Executive And Judicial Branches

The Trump administration will ask Congress for $58 million in security funding for the executive and judicial branches following the Sept. 10 assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University.

The supplemental funding request directs resources to the U.S. Marshals Service and includes enhanced protection for Supreme Court justices, a White House official said. The administration also supports increased funding for congressional security but will defer to the legislative branch on specifics, CBS News reported.

“We’ve got to protect people who run for public office or no one will, and that’s heavy on our hearts and minds, as we also, you know, work through the trauma of what happened,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Thursday, adding that a thorough review of security protocols is underway.

The Senate is considering similar safety measures as threats against lawmakers surge. U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan told the outlet that his department expects to log more than 14,000 threats to members by year’s end, surpassing levels seen in prior years. “We’re prepared to continue to react and keep the members of Congress safe,” Sullivan said, confirming USCP will operate at a “heightened posture” going forward.

Kirk’s assassination at a campus speaking event intensified concerns about political violence against public figures. The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was shot once in the neck 20 minutes into his speech, sending attendees fleeing and prompting nationwide security reassessments for political events.
