President Donald Trump said he is considering withdrawing the United States from NATO following disagreements with allied nations over their response to the ongoing Iran conflict, as reported by Fox News.
In an interview published Wednesday by The Daily Telegraph, President Trump made clear his frustration with the alliance’s stance, stating, “I was never swayed by NATO.”
The president, who has frequently criticized NATO, said reconsidering U.S. membership was “beyond consideration.”

“I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way,” Trump told the British outlet.
The remarks come after reports that several European nations declined the administration’s request to send naval forces to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is a critical global shipping route through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
Iran has threatened or taken steps to restrict access to the strait in response to U.S. military actions targeting Iranian positions. The situation has raised concerns about potential disruptions to global energy markets and broader economic stability.
President Trump said the lack of allied participation was unexpected.

“Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe. And I didn’t do a big sale. I just said, ‘Hey,’ you know, I didn’t insist too much. I just think it should be automatic,” he said.
He also pointed to past U.S. support for allies as a contrast.

“We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn’t our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren’t there for us,” Trump said.
The president also criticized the United Kingdom and its leadership over the response to the conflict.
He directed remarks at Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying, “You don’t even have a navy. You’re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn’t work.”
In response, Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to NATO, calling the alliance “the single most effective military alliance the world has ever seen.”
Starmer told reporters that “whatever the pressure on me and others, whatever the noise, I am going to act in the British national interest in all the decisions I make.”
The exchange highlights growing tensions between the United States and several NATO allies as the conflict involving Iran continues to develop.
The administration’s request for military support in securing the Strait of Hormuz has become a point of contention within the alliance.
