The approval, announced Friday, comes just 11 days after the U.S. Department of the Interior instructed the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to complete its environmental assessment within a two-week window.

The project is owned and operated by Anfield Energy, a Canadian-based mining company.

Located in eastern Utah, the Velvet-Wood site contains uranium deposits considered critical to U.S. energy and national security interests.

The streamlined approval process represents a significant departure from the traditional months-long—or in some cases, years-long—review period typically required for mining projects on federal land.

The new review framework follows President Donald Trump’s January declaration of a national energy emergency, which included a directive to overhaul existing regulations in order to accelerate development of domestic energy and mineral resources.

The Trump administration has emphasized the importance of reducing U.S. reliance on foreign sources of critical materials, including uranium, which is used in nuclear power, military technology, and medical applications.

“This approval marks a turning point in how we secure America’s mineral future,” said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum in a statement cited by the Salt Lake Tribune.

“By streamlining the review process for critical mineral projects like Velvet-Wood, we’re reducing dependence on foreign adversaries and ensuring our military, medical, and energy sectors have the resources they need to thrive. This is mineral security in action.”

The Trump administration’s focus on mineral independence has been evident in other policy efforts as well.

In recent years, Trump proposed acquiring Greenland in part due to its rich deposits of rare earth elements and other strategic minerals.

Additionally, Trump has held discussions with Ukrainian officials to secure access to mineral resources needed for advanced manufacturing and energy production, tying those agreements to broader national security support for the country as it continues to face aggression from Russia.

The Velvet-Wood approval has already drawn attention from environmental advocacy groups, who say they were not given adequate time to review or respond to the BLM’s findings.

However, federal officials maintain that the project falls well within legal guidelines and that the accelerated timeline was a direct result of the president’s emergency energy order.

Under the new policy framework, similar critical mineral projects are expected to be reviewed under significantly shorter timelines, with agencies instructed to remove administrative delays and unnecessary regulatory hurdles.

According to Anfield Energy, the company will begin preparing the site for development immediately and anticipates a full ramp-up of operations pending final operational permits and logistical setup.

The Velvet-Wood site had previously been mined during the mid-20th century but was shuttered amid shifting energy policies and market prices.

With renewed federal interest and streamlined permitting, the company sees renewed viability in restarting uranium production in the region.

As of Monday, the Department of the Interior had not indicated whether additional mining projects are currently being reviewed under the same expedited process.

However, administration officials have signaled that additional critical mineral approvals are expected in the coming months.
