President Trump’s former National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien has warned Britain must learn from America’s crumbling relationship with Ireland. In a new Policy Exchange report, O’Brien says:
“The Trump Administration and the American people expect better burden sharing from our allies and partners. Much of Europe is stepping up – but Ireland contributes almost nothing to the defence of the Atlantic and European regions from which it benefits so much.”
The report highlights Ireland’s wafer-thin defence spend of just 0.2% of GDP, its $50 billion trade surplus with the US fuelled by its tax haven status, and growing policy misalignment with Washington – especially on Israel. With Trump pivoting towards a more continental approach, Dublin is being left out in the cold…
