Two-year-old boy in Montgomery County survives fall from 15th floor

A 2-year-old boy in Silver Spring, Maryland, fell from a 15th-floor apartment balcony, hit bushes on the ground and lived with an injury.

The child, who has not been named, fell at the Enclave Apartments at 2:11 p.m. Thursday. He fell into brush and mulch and was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Montgomery County Police Department said, according to the MoCo Show blog.

The apartment the boy fell from has protective glass on its balcony, but not a railing, MCPD spokeswoman Shiera Goff told ABC News. Adults were home at the time of the fall.

“By all accounts seems to be doing pretty well. The child was alert and conscious and crying with Mom. Only possible injury was a possible broken arm,” Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Assistant Chief Daniel Ogren told MoCo Show.

The boy’s physique, along with the bushes, helped him survive.

“His age and size and weight [are] really what helped, because if he had been any heavier, he may not have survived. I think it was a combination of those bushes being there, those shrubs, and his size and weight,” Ms. Goff said.

Others living in the complex wonder how the boy managed to get up and over the balcony.

“It’s horrible, and the balcony is probably at least 2 feet tall. So if it’s a child that young, how did he fall off? It’s miraculous to hear. When I look up to the 15th floor, this is a building with 20 floors, so 15 is very, very high. So, thank God, it’s a miracle that the child survived,” Enclave Tenant Association Vice President Pascal Lemaire told Washington’s WTTG-TV.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no criminal charges have been filed over the boy’s fall.
