‘Uninvited guest’ starts shootout at Houston party that kills 1, wounds 13

Houston police said Sunday that one person was killed and 13 others were wounded after an “uninvited guest” crashed a family barbecue and began shooting at partygoers, prompting the other attendees to fire back.

Houston Police Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu said several people are in critical condition following the shootout that started around 12:50 a.m. Sunday in the city’s South Side.

Authorities did not identify the victim killed in the shooting, nor the others who were injured.

Police also said they have multiple people detained for questioning, but were not sure if they had nabbed the suspect.

Chief Cantu said the chaos started when the unwanted guest showed up to the party.

“The uninvited guest was asked to leave. As he was leaving, he began shooting in the area,” the chief said. “There was return fire from the residents as well.”

Chief Cantu said officers arrived within three minutes of the shootout starting and still heard people trading gunfire as they raced toward the scene.

Police said, with the help of Houston Fire Department, they began moving the wounded to a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant so they could receive treatment.

Those with less serious injuries took themselves to a hospital after they escaped the fracas, the chief said.
