Unite Demands Bus Driver Stop Work When it Gets Too Hot
Unite has told its bus drivers to hand management a letter informing them they will stop working when it gets too hot. The letter tells management the driver has ceased work – or will do so – under the Employment Rights Act to remove themselves from a situation of “serious and imminent danger” if the temperature hits 40°C. Ever heard of air con?
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said:
“Bus companies must stop passing the buck and take immediate action to ensure the safety of their drivers and passengers in extreme heat. For too long employers have played fast and loose with driver safety, putting profits before people.”
And this is before Rayner’s union bill hands the unions even more powers…
