Roommates Nicole Fox and Felicia woke up at 3 a.m. Friday to a terrifying sight: their Costa Mesa, California street completely submerged in floodwaters.
Filming the chaos, Nicole and Felicia captured the moment a car went into the floodwaters, only to float helplessly and start spinning out of control.
Nicole immediately dialed 911 as an elderly man climbed out of the vehicle, saying that he wasn’t okay. According to KTLA, the stranded driver is a Vietnam War veteran. (RELATED: Record-Breaking Melissa Confirmed To Have Strongest Wind Ever For Hurricane At 252 MPH)
Nicole told Storyful that Felicia sprang into action and “ran down there, guided him through the water, lifted him over the curb and brought him to safety,” per FOX Weather. The two women then stayed with him, watching as his car drifted away before Felicia drove the veteran home.
When Costa Mesa fire crews arrived, they found the veteran already rescued, the city told KTLA in a statement. Officials confirmed the man was unharmed and required no medical attention.
In the footage captured by Nicole, firefighters can also be seen smashing car windows and checking inside submerged vehicles to make sure no one was trapped — finding each one empty.
