Officials continue to investigate the shooting of five Army soldiers that occurred Wednesday, as the suspect has been taken into custody. The alleged perpetrator is 28-year-old Sgt. Quornelius Radford.
The shooting occurred around 10:56 a.m. at the Fort Stewart–Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia, as Radford allegedly opened fire in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base. Radford used a personal handgun instead of an Army-issued combat weapon.
According to reports, fellow Army soldiers courageously tackled Radford, halting the attack until law enforcement arrived and a lockdown was instated. Three of the victims underwent surgery. However, all five of the victims are expected to make full recoveries.
Radford enlisted in the Army in 2018, serving as an automated logistics sergeant. While no motive has been disclosed, Radford had a DUI arrest in May, which was unknown to his chain of command at the time. He was out on bond and scheduled for a court appearance on Aug. 20.
Reports have found that before the shooting, Radford left a cryptic message for his family, stating that he would be in “a better place” soon, and that he was “about to go and do something.” These statements may indicate that Radford did not expect to survive the shooting, but any murder-suicide plot has not been confirmed.
His father, Eddie Radford, alleged that his son had experienced racism at the Army base and dealt with lingering depression following his mother’s death during his childhood.
CNN analyst and retired General Ty Seidule stated, “He now falls under the Uniform Code of Military Justice — a completely different justice system than every other [civilian] has.”
President Donald Trump spoke to White House reporters, stating, “The Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site to ensure that the perpetrator of this atrocity, which is exactly what it is, will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Additionally, FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino has noted that the FBI is assisting the investigation on-site.
