Conner Smith surrendered the fate of his career to God after his involvement in a fatal car crash.
Smith was behind the wheel of a truck that struck and killed 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins in June 2025. The Nashville woman was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center where she later died of her injuries. On Wednesday, six months after the crash, the famous singer told The Upload with Brooke Taylor that his future in music lies in the hands of the Lord. “There’s been so many people asking me, ‘Man, when are you gonna get back and post on socials? Put out music again,’” the singer said. “And it’s like, ‘When God tells me to.’”
Reflecting on the fatal accident, Smith said, “It’s like there’s a tornado that runs through your house, and there’s so much grief, and there’s so much trauma.”
“I turned off my phone and I put it in a drawer for four weeks,” he said.
It was then that he turned to his faith. “There’s nothing here I can try to salvage. God you get to decide what you want to build,” Smith said.
Relying on religion to guide the way through the troubled times, Smith said, “Alright God, you get to decide what this next chapter looks like.”

Smith said he felt the decision to return to music was not his to make, and he felt at peace leaning on his faith for guidance.
“It’s like, ‘God, I don’t wanna pick a color of the paint on the walls,’” Smith said, reflecting on the tragedy. “There’s a new house being built here, and I don’t want to have a single decision…God, you build this house, and I will sit with you and I will be with you.”

He reiterated that he has “a lot of peace” thinking about returning to music, and thinks it will be “really soon when we’re gonna be able to step back into that,” but he’s looking for a signal from God.
“I’m just living in such a place of peace, and such a place of overflow and the spirit of the Lord,” Smith said.

Smith was not impaired in any way at the time of the accident, according to Taste of Country.
The singer was issued a misdemeanor citation for failure to yield resulting in a fatality. The citation was classified as a traffic violation, not a criminal offense as it was determined there was no intent to cause harm.
