White House Correspondents Dinner Has Awkward Mix Up with Two Black Women

An internal camera feed at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner mistakenly cut to the wrong journalist during remarks by White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) President Eugene Daniels, according to multiple attendees.

Ruthless Podcast co-host ComfortablySmug and Puck News co-founder Julia Ioffe both posted on X that NBC News White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor was mistakenly shown on the internal feed instead of Black Press USA Washington Bureau Chief April Ryan.

The White House Correspondents’ Association has not yet responded to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation regarding the incident.

The error occurred around 10:10 p.m. Eastern time during Daniels’ speech, as he spoke about honoring Ryan and awarding the Dunnigan-Payne Prize for Lifetime Achievement to former WHCA President Bob Ellison.

Both Ryan and Ellison have longstanding ties to American Urban Radio Networks.

During his speech, Daniels appeared to shake his head and mouth the words “That’s not her” after the internal event feed mistakenly displayed Alcindor’s image while he praised Ryan.

Alcindor also appeared aware of the mistake, mouthing, “I’m not April Ryan” while the camera remained on her.

When contacted by the Daily Caller News Foundation, Ioffe confirmed that the error took place on the internal feed that was being shown inside the event venue.

Public broadcast feeds, including those aired by CSPAN and MSNBC, did not capture the mistake and instead correctly showed Ryan at her table during the presentation.

The WHCA’s Dunnigan-Payne Prize for Lifetime Achievement honors journalists who have made significant contributions to the field of journalism, with a focus on trailblazing reporters from underrepresented communities.

April Ryan, a longtime member of the White House press corps and a veteran journalist, was recognized during the dinner for her contributions to political reporting and her work covering multiple administrations.

The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner brings together political figures, journalists, and media executives to celebrate the role of the free press and honor distinguished reporting.

This year’s event drew attendees from across the country and was broadcast live on several major news outlets.

The WHCA has not yet issued a statement addressing the technical error during the internal broadcast.
