MSNBC host Rachel Maddow claimed Monday night that President Donald Trump had effectively lost the political battle over immigration enforcement in California, citing ongoing protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and the deployment of the National Guard, as reported by The New York Post.

Speaking during her weekly show, Maddow said, “He has no idea what to do with the sustained and growing and intractable and indomitable protest and opposition of the American people against him. And so he has decided to try to fix it by using the army. Sure. Game over, big guy. You lose. The movement against Trump is unstoppable, now more than ever.”
Maddow directed her criticism at President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard in response to escalating anti-ICE demonstrations across California. The protests have led to clashes with law enforcement, property damage, and numerous arrests.

“What we are seeing right now in California is a president panicking,” Maddow said.
“We have never before in the history of the US presidency seen a president who is less popular than this one at this point in his term. And we have never seen a president less politically skilled, less politically equipped than this one to turn that kind of problem around, and so he has panicked, he is trying to hit the eject button.”

Maddow suggested that Trump’s enforcement strategy is politically motivated. “Somebody told him that attacking immigrants would work for him politically,” she said, arguing that protests across states—regardless of political leaning—demonstrate a rejection of the administration’s immigration policies.
“In town after town, in blue states and red states, in school after school, in parish after parish, in city after city… the American people do not want this kind of cruelty against the immigrants who live among us and are our neighbors and friends,” Maddow said. “He has no idea what to do.”

Despite Maddow’s assertions, recent national polling has shown continued majority support for deportation policies and stricter immigration enforcement.
Maddow also criticized the military response during a segment with fellow MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell.
“Even if these protests were 100 times the size that they are, there still wouldn’t be an operational reason to bring in active-duty troops or federalized National Guard,” she said. “This is obviously not operationally necessitated.”
In response to Maddow’s comments, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital:
“Rachel Maddow is a tragic example of an individual suffering from late-stage TDS. We hope she is able to get the help she needs and that other individuals suffering from this disease see how bad it can get, and seek help before it’s too late.”
Maddow now hosts her MSNBC program only once per week, on Monday nights, after scaling back from her prior daily broadcast schedule following Trump’s first 100 days in office.
