White Sox Honor Pope Leo XIV By Marking His 2005 World Series Seat With Plaque

This is pretty damn cool.

The Chicago White Sox are still taking advantage of Pope Leo XIV being a massive fan of their franchise, and they’re doing it in style. (RELATED: Fan Literally Dragged Out By Security After Crashing Warmups For Brewers-Cubs Game)

Back when he was just a (sort of) regular supporter of the team, the pope was in attendance for a 2005 World Series game that took place at Rate Field, the home of the White Sox. 20 years later, and the organization has now slapped a marker on the seat that he was sitting in. After he became pope, pictures of Leo XIV at Game 1 went viral.

A native of Chicago, the seat now features a photo of Leo XIV with a plaque that reads, “mark(ing) the location where Pope Leo XIV cheered on the White Sox during Game 1 of the 2005 World Series.” At the time, Leo XIV was a cardinal.

If you’re the White Sox, you have to take advantage of the Pope Leo situation. Not only are you coming off an historic 121-loss season, but you’re still horrendous with a current 46-83 record. The Pope Leo story is the most positive press that the White Sox have had in a while.

And it’s not just the Sox showing the pope some love, it’s the whole city of Chicago.

Pope Leo XIV … the king of Chicago right now? … what do you think, chat?
