Why bother about creation?

Why bother about creation? Isn’t it better to ignore issues where Christians disagree and get on with evangelism?

Telling people the gospel is certainly the task of the church as a whole and of God’s people individually. Taking God’s good news to unconverted friends and neighbours is a priority for every healthy congregation. However, I am intrigued by your suggestion that in order to get on with evangelism we need to ignore issues where Christians disagree, including such matters as creation.

Without doubt, there are many issues regarding which Christians have different nuance and emphasis – sometimes significant differences of conviction. These differences do not mean that we hate each other, but may restrict the nature, extent, and degree of our cooperation.

For example, it is hard to plant a church with people whose thinking about what the church is and how it is formed is different to yours, but you might still evangelise alongside people who have the same fundamental gospel commitment as you despite other differences (which we do not just ignore). Many Christians are full of happy inconsistencies, or are better than our confusions and mistakes might suggest – hopefully including ourselves!
