I love football, I love extreme weather, and when the two mix, I’m in a meteorological sports heaven.
A massive dust storm, which is known as a haboob, conquered Phoenix and the surrounding areas of the city Monday, and this included Arizona State‘s football stadium in Tempe. (RELATED: Minnesota High School Forced To Cancel Football Games Over Federal Law Protecting Ospreys)
Here in monsoon season, it’s not uncommon that Arizona has to deal with a dust storm, but still, when you see videos and photographs of a massive dust wall coming at you sending everything into darkness, it’s some pretty intense stuff.
The official Twitter account of the Sun Devils football program posted a time-lapse video of the haboob, and it put a spotlight on how quickly they can move and take over an entire area. Within seconds, Mountain American Stadium was engulfed by the storm, with the incredible amount of dust blocking the sunshine entirely.

Though it’s cool to see, the situation did have some serious impacts on the area.
In Maricopa County, which features major cities Phoenix and Tempe, more than 15,000 people reportedly lost their power. And at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, flights were grounded until the dust storm passed.
