Hundreds of sharks were seen hunting down food around the beach of a popular vacation spot off the coast of Australia.
Tourists were shocked to see the apex predators during a natural phenomenon that took place off Moreton Island, Queensland.
A shark-watching professional used a drone to catch the scene on video, posting the footage on his @dronesharkapp account on Instagram. (RELATED: Wild Video Shows Orcas Flipping Over, Slicing Open Great White Sharks To Devour Their Livers)
It’s believed that the sharks were drawn in due to a huge bait ball, which is a massive group of schooling fish that swim with one another to cause confusion for their predators. In this case, they were sardines.
When sharks get in a big group, it’s called a shiver, and sightings like what’s in the footage shows an ecosystem that’s healthy, per Bond University shark expert Dr. Daryl McPhee via 7NEWS.

According to McPhee per 7NEWS, the sharks appear to be a variety of whaler sharks, warning that the feeding frenzy should have tourists and photographers cautious despite how mesmerizing the sight is.
“The species of sharks present are likely to change during the day,” said McPhee, according to the outlet.
“It’s something that really should be appreciated but there’s no way anybody should be getting the water around those bait balls, no matter where they are.”
