Winter is set to reassert itself as a quick-moving clipper system will bring hurricane-force winds and blankets of snowfall ranging from Montana and Idaho eastward to Michigan and New York. Simultaneously, portions of the central U.S. will be facing an elevated to high wildfire risk.
The clipper will come after a round of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes across the Central and Eastern states to bring an end to the recent surge of warm temperatures, with some even challenging all-time record highs.
The system is expected to push east Thursday through Friday across the border between cool air located in the northern United States and Arctic air developing over Canada that’s much colder, according to AccuWeather.
As a result of the system’s intensity, a wide area of powerful wind gusts will be capable of toppling trees, downing power lines, overturning vehicles and causing damage to property. (RELATED: Hurricane Season ’26: Here Are Storm Names For Weather’s Most Powerful Force)
Flying debris poses an additional hazard. Unsecured items like trash cans, pet food containers and outdoor furniture will have the potential to become dangerous.
There will be the possibility of strong wind gusts Thursday reaching up to 60–80 mph — AccuWeather has a Local StormMax of 115 mph — from the northern portion of Idaho and northwestern Montana through the Colorado Rockies.
A larger zone of 40–60 mph wind gusts is expected to stretch east into Indiana, Ohio and southern parts of Michigan.
Gusty winds, low humidity, dry vegetation, warm temperatures and abundant sunshine will come together to create an elevated wildfire risk along much of the Plains and the Rockies’ eastern slopes, where winter precipitation has been notably scarce.

After a stretch of springlike warmth from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, a storm will spread snow across the Dakotas, northern Minnesota and northern New England Thursday into Friday, with heavier totals near the lakes Sunday into Sunday night. pic.twitter.com/lGALPSQ2Zm

The fire threat is anticipated to be particularly acute in regions not yet seeing seasonal greenup, which features a large swath of the Nebraska Panhandle and parts around Cheyenne, Wyoming.
While the strong clipper accelerates east, the area of high gusts will move Friday along the Midwest and through zones of the Northeast. A corridor of gusts that could reach 60 mph have the possibility of affecting segments of Interstates 70 and 80. AccuWeather’s Local StormMax is at 70 mph.
The highest risk of powerful crosswinds will occur across north-south interstate routes, which includes Interstates 55, 57, 65, 69, 75, 77 and 79.
It’s expected that power outages will take place with huge tree limbs snapping or entire trees falling. Residents should maintain the charge of their cell phones and consider having a portable generator on hand for extended outages. On the north side of the system’s center, a 1,500-mile-long band of accumulating snowfall will spread rapidly to the east from the afternoon hours Thursday through Friday night. The locations that see most of the snow overnight into early Friday will be dealing with slippery roads, sidewalks and parking lots.
Many zones ranging from North Dakota to northeastern New York and northern Maine are forecast to experience 1–3 inches of snowfall. The area with the highest likelihood of 6–12 inches will cover a heavy portion of northern Michigan.
Snowfall along a lot of the region will have vulnerability to blowing and drifting because of the system’s powerful winds. As a result, short-lasting periods of blizzard conditions are possible in a few spots. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has the greatest chance of a sustained blizzard.
A much stronger storm with the potential for heavier snowfall is forecast to impact the Great Lakes this weekend. The system will usher in a fresh surge of Arctic air that will range from the Midwest towards the Northeast early next week.
