Police in Honolulu arrested a woman this week for taking a boat from the city’s harbor and going for a joyride despite a statewide tsunami warning.
The tsunami alert was prompted by Tuesday’s magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. During tsunami warnings, Hawaii’s residents are asked to move inland to higher ground and avoid low-lying coastal areas.
The woman, unnamed by police, took the boat out on the water Tuesday night and returned to harbor at around 4 a.m. Wednesday, crashing into other boats as she did so, according to Honolulu’s KITV.
Police took the woman into custody immediately and have not publicly disclosed what, if any, charges she’s facing.
The tsunami warning was lifted for the state later Wednesday, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said in a release.
